My Why

On May 25th 2020, George Floyd, a 46 year old black man, was murdered in the U.S by a white police officer, named Derek Chauvin. Derek knelt on George’s neck for over nine minutes while George was handcuffed and lying face down in the street.

With a knee on his neck, George pleaded with the police officer, repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe” and after minutes of expressing fear of imminent death, George stopped speaking and lay on the ground motionless, still with Derek’s knee on his neck.

George Floyd died at the scene in front of bystanders and Derek’s fellow police officers.

The death of George Floyd was captured on shop security cameras and on by-standers mobile phones. The footage was quickly shared on social media platforms, on television and in news papers, which sparked world-wide outrage and protests against police brutality, police racism and lack of police accountability.
